Please correct the BENCHICH (wrong) in BENCICH (right). BENČIĆ, written in Croatian, in Italian writing and reads right is BENCICH. Is a very common surname in Istria (now part of Croatia and Slovenia) and the ancestors comes from Tuscany (Italy). The BENCI (now usually written as BENCI, BENCICH, BENČIĆ, BENCIC and BENCINI) are present in Istria since the XII-XIII century.
If you write BENČIĆ as BENCHICH, you put those who are looking for the surname BENČIĆ in the mistake of thinking that surname comes from the name BENKO (Slovenian diminutive for the name BENEDIKT), what is definitely wrong because the simply reason that Istrians (who knows the Italian, Croatian and Slovenian language) would read BENCHICH as BENKIĆ; certainly not as BENČIĆ!

My family immigrated to Canada about 1960, my paternal grandfather was Luigi Bencic. I know that this was after my family wound up in a refugee camp in northern Italy in a town called Trieste, and they were given an option of Canada or Austrailia
