Places to look for vital records

As a devoted genealogist that keeps looking for data about his or her Croatian ancestors, it is sooner or later inevitable to realize that probably most important places to look are various archives that keep and preserve vital records of Croats from centuries past. In Croatia, there are several types of officially established archives two of which are particularly important: those established by the government (State Archives or državni arhivi) and those run by churches.

The network of government run archives consist of the central Croatian State Archive in Zagreb (Hrvatski državni arhiv u Zagrebu) and more than a dozen regional archives in Croatian cities of Bjelovar, Dubrovnik, Gospić, Karlovac, Osijek, Pazin, Rijeka, Sisak, Štrigova, Slavonski Brod, Split, Varaždin, Zadar and Zagreb. Since many of the vital records from Croatia are microfilmed, a genealogist can obtain regional genealogical information in the Croatian State Archive in Zagreb.

Capitular archive in Zagreb (Arhiv Prvostolnog kaptola) is one of the main archives of the Catholic church in Croatia which is divided into a private and a public part. Older material from this archive had been transfered to Croatian State Archive. Other Catholic archives in Croatia are Archives of the Chapter of Čazma and Zagreb Archiepiscopal Library (Metropolitana).
