The Name Grdenic has been misspelled in America in many different ways. Almost always due to young Croatian immigrants arriving on Ellis Island where document officers heard the pronunciation and spelled phonetically — my grandfather was 17 when he arrived and when he said, “Gerdenich” they gave him papers with the spelling, Grdnic. He thought that was his new “American name.” There are Grdnich, Gridnic, Gerdnic, Gridnic, Gridnich and many others –all from the same Croatian origin.
My surname is Gerdenits, also a variant of Grdenic and Grdinic. Gerdinich, Gerdenich, Gerdenics and Gerdinics are also very common where I live. In my case that’s because my ancestors from Croatia immigrated to Hungary, so they simply wrote it after the Hungarian spelling.
