Hi There
Just found your site and find it fascinating.
I’ve researched most of my family geneology &
Come across the surname ” Knezovic “. Just would appreciate some information on where in Croatia it is most found & if its also found in Slovenia as well perhaps ? Also the meaning as well as the spelling differences between ” Knezovic ” & ” Knezovich ” why is that ? Would also welcome information on the surname ” Proske “. Think its German actually but look forward to your reply on the above mentioned.
Many thanks & kind regards
Steve
Hi Steve, right now I accidentally have bumped on your question. With a delay of several years you have the answer here about spelling.
The spelling differences between Knezovic and Knezovich lies in the Latin language. Latin doesn’t have letter Ć. Latin language was in use in Croatia up to 19 centuries. So, insted letter Ć latin spelling (ortography) use ch. Sometimes in older version cch, end that is not all Medieval Latin use sometimes letter S instead Z . So, the family name Knezović it is written as Knezovic or Knezovich or Knesovich or Knesovicch. English also doesn’t have letter Ć so instead Ć englisch uses C.
Family name Knezovic or Knezović or Knezovich or Knesovich or Knesovicch is 100% old Croatian name. Very, very old.

Hello Steve. My grandmother reported that her nation of origin was Austria in the region of Dalmatia prior to her arrival in the USA during 1905. Of course, Dalmatia, now a region of Croatia was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire(pre-WWI). My understanding is that Knez means “prince” and ovich means “son of”. Apparently, some prince of the region made frequent visits to the local milkmaids resulting in a sprinkling of royal blood. At least that may account for my branch of the clan. As far as the origins of Knez, it may be a derivation from the german Konig for king? Let me know if you find out any new info. Good Luck
