Dear Maggie,
The spelling is right even though in Croatian is more common to have Marušić last name. This last name origins from Lokva Rogoznica which is location close to Omis, but you have a lot of Marusich families in Zadar area and throught whole Croatia. Do you know the name of husband of your grandfather’s mother? And its highly likely we might be related. If you have more questions feel free to contact me.

Hello Maggie and Filipa,
I am trying to find out more about my great grandfather, IVAN MARUŠIĆ, who died in World War I. We know he married Julka ”Julia” Želem (Carpatho-Rusyn surname), who lived in Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia (part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire back then, of course). Julia and her children, Marie and John, came to the U.S. after Ivan was killed in the war. My cousins and I are planning a trip to Serbia where we have found some Želem cousins, and we would like to see if we can find some information about Ivan and his family before we go. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to research them?
Many thanks!

Hi Filipa,
I just stumbled upon this forum while looking for information on the Marušić surname. My great grandfather was named Ivan Marušić. He married Julka Želem in Sremska Mitrovica (Serbia now, Austro-Hungarian Empire then), and they had two children, Marija and Ivan. Ivan Sr. was killed in WWI, and the rest of the family emigrated to the U.S. in 1919, becoming Julia, Marie, and John. It looks like Ivan Sr.’s parents, Antun and Eva Marušić, were not born in Serbia. We have searched. So we are wondering if they were from Croatia originally. Do any of these names sound familiar to you?

My Babas last name was Marušić, she was born in Marušići on the coast of Croatia. My great grandma’s name was Novak. My Marusic family tree belonged to the Saklar Marusic tribe. I don’t know much other than that. If you have anymore information I would love to know!
