All the Simunic’s in my family tree came from the village of Bilaj, just a couple of miles south of Gospic. On a couple of maps I found, just across the Lika River was the Simunici which I was told was the Simunic Village. When I visited I was told that the village was no longer there.

The Simunic’s in my lineage all come from Youngstown, Ohio. Vicent (Winko,Vinco) Simunich married Rose Pavlakovich and had 8 children, John, Mary, Diane, Christine, Stephen, Frank, Robert and an infanct that died soon after birth. His name was Stephen so they named the next born also Steven. All of this generation has passed away. I am a decendent of John, the oldest brother. Vincent and Rose immigrated in the early 1900s via New York , Ellis Island. Not sure where they came from but I was told it was near Zagreb which could be Bilaj. Vincent worked in the steel mills of Youngstown and lost an eye during a hot pouring of molten steel into an ingot. His son John, my father, also worked in the mills.

Means Son of Simon. Or Šimun.
